ANT CONTROL IN LAND O’ LAKES AND PASCO COUNTY

Ants Keep Finding the Same Counter, Window, or Sink?

The trail tells us more than the can of spray. Show us where it starts, where it disappears, and what is nearby.

Call About the Ants

A few ants can turn into a daily cleanup because the source is somewhere else.

Wiping the counter removes the ants you can see. It does not reach the nest or the route bringing them in. If the trail returns after the surface dries, follow it in both directions before cleaning it away again. A window corner, outlet, plumbing opening, cabinet seam, or gap beneath the baseboard can be the useful clue.

Around Land O’ Lakes, ants move between damp soil, mulch, pavers, tree limbs, irrigated beds, wall gaps, and indoor water sources. A kitchen trail after heavy rain may have a different starting point from ants that appear around the same bathroom plumbing every week.

Ant identification matters. Tiny light-colored ants, dark household ants, large ants near damp wood, and fire ants in the yard are not handled as one problem. A close photo beside a coin or ruler helps show the size without having to catch one in your hand.

FOLLOW THE TRAIL

What to notice before the ants disappear

The exact place they enter

Look along grout lines, window tracks, pipe openings, cabinet corners, and the back edge of counters. The visible trail may stop at a wall, but that stopping point is useful.

What they are gathering around

Sugar, grease, pet food, moisture, dead insects, and even residue beneath a small appliance can keep a trail active. Do not be embarrassed by crumbs. The goal is to find the pattern.

Whether the ants are indoors, outdoors, or both

Check the exterior side of the same wall. Mulch, touching branches, potted plants, hose bibs, and irrigation heads can lead activity toward the house.

HOW ANT CONTROL IS NARROWED DOWN

The plan depends on the ant, the route, and the nest location.

Baits can work well for some ants because workers carry material back through the colony. A repellent spray placed across that route can interfere with the process. That is why it helps to say what has already been used and when.

Indoor activity may call for a careful treatment around the trail and entry point. Outdoor activity may need attention along the foundation, landscape edge, trees, or a specific mound. Fire ants in a lawn are not the same job as tiny ants inside a wall.

After the immediate activity settles, food storage, pet bowls, leaking fixtures, plant contact, and small gaps can be addressed without turning the home into a sealed laboratory. The practical fixes are the ones a household can keep doing.

What helps before an ant visit

You do not need to empty the whole kitchen. Preserve the trail long enough to show where it is going.

Take one close photo and one room photo

The close photo helps with identification. The wider photo shows whether the trail is near plumbing, a window, food storage, or an exterior wall.

Keep the product you used

A picture of the label is enough. Mixing sprays and baits or repeating applications too quickly can make it harder to understand what is working.

Check pet food and potted plants

Ants can travel beneath bowls, mats, saucers, and pots. Those areas are easy to overlook because the trail may only appear at certain times.

Ant questions from local homeowners

The short answers before you start spraying every seam in the room.

Why do ants come back after I wipe the counter?

The workers you removed were following a route from a nest or entry point. Cleaning removes the visible trail, but the colony may send more workers to the same food or water source.

Should I spray the ant trail?

Take photos first and avoid adding more products if an appointment is already planned. Some sprays can scatter ants or interfere with baits. Tell the technician what has already been applied.

Are large ants a sign of termites?

Large ants and termites are different insects. Large ants around damp or damaged wood still deserve attention because moisture or a nesting site may be present.

Why are ants worse after rain?

Heavy rain can disturb outdoor nesting areas and push ants toward dry shelter. Damp soil and new moisture around the house can also change their routes.

Can ants come through electrical outlets?

They can travel through wall voids and appear around outlets or switches. Do not spray liquid into electrical openings. Photograph the activity and point out the exact location.

Do I need to remove all food from the kitchen?

Usually not before the first conversation. Store open food, wipe ordinary spills, and leave enough evidence to show where the trail has been active. Specific preparation depends on the treatment plan.

Show us where the ants keep returning.

Send a close photo, the room or outdoor area, and the place where the trail disappears. That gives us a useful starting point.
