ROACH CONTROL IN LAND O’ LAKES AND PASCO COUNTY

Roaches in the Kitchen, Bathroom, Garage, or Drains?

Size and location matter. A large outdoor roach that wandered in is not the same problem as small roaches living around cabinets.

Call About the Roaches

“Palmetto bug” can mean several very different situations.

Large roaches often live outdoors around leaf litter, mulch, drains, garages, and damp utility areas. They can wander inside through door gaps, plumbing openings, vents, or items brought in from storage. One large roach after rain is unpleasant, but it does not automatically mean a kitchen infestation.

Small roaches repeatedly seen near food, water, cabinets, and appliances are a different concern. They hide in tight spaces, reproduce indoors, and may spread to adjoining rooms or units. Seeing young roaches during the day, spotting dark specks in cabinet corners, or finding egg cases are useful details to report.

Roaches need food, water, shelter, and a route. Treatment works better when the plan accounts for all four instead of soaking every baseboard with the strongest-smelling product on the shelf.

WHAT KIND OF ACTIVITY IS THIS?

A few clues help separate an intruder from an indoor population.

Large roaches near doors, drains, or the garage

Note the weather, time, and nearest opening. Door sweeps, drain covers, pipe gaps, and stored cardboard may be more relevant than the kitchen counter.

Small roaches near cabinets and appliances

Check hinge areas, drawer tracks, the refrigerator motor area, under the sink, and the edge where the counter meets the wall. Do not move an infested appliance to another room.

Activity in more than one unit or room

Shared walls, plumbing lines, deliveries, storage, and neighboring spaces can keep reintroducing activity. Apartments and commercial kitchens need coordination, not isolated spot spraying.

A PRACTICAL ROACH PLAN

The places roaches hide matter more than the open floor.

Inspection focuses on cracks, cabinet voids, appliance warmth, plumbing, moisture, food residue, and entry points. Small amounts of carefully placed material can be more useful than a broad wet spray where people prepare food.

Large outdoor roaches may call for exterior changes and treatment around likely entry areas. Small indoor roaches usually need monitoring, targeted bait or treatment, sanitation that removes competing food, and follow-up based on what the monitors show.

Do not use bug bombs in a home with a roach problem. They may not reach the tight hiding places and can push insects deeper into walls or other rooms. If one has already been used, say when and where.

Before someone looks at the roach problem

A normal tidy-up is fine. A deep clean can erase the evidence that shows where the activity is centered.

Photograph the roach beside something for scale

A coin, cabinet hinge, or tile grout line helps show whether the insect is large or small. A blurry picture across the room is harder to identify.

Report leaks and appliance activity

A slow sink leak, refrigerator drip pan, dishwasher gap, coffee station, pet-water area, or hot appliance motor can keep a small pocket of activity going.

Leave cabinets reasonably accessible

You may be asked to move food and dishes for a specific service, but do not empty the whole kitchen until you receive preparation instructions.

Roach questions without the scare tactics

What the size, location, and timing usually tell us.

Does one big palmetto bug mean the house is infested?

Not necessarily. Large roaches often live outside and occasionally enter. Repeated activity, young roaches, droppings, egg cases, or small roaches around cabinets are more concerning.

Why do roaches appear after heavy rain?

Rain can flood outdoor hiding places and move roaches toward garages, lanais, drains, and dry indoor shelter. Door gaps and plumbing openings become important entry points.

Can roaches come through drains?

Some species use damp plumbing and drain areas, but the route may also be a pipe gap around the drain rather than the drain opening itself. The exact location should be checked.

Should I empty every kitchen cabinet?

Wait for instructions based on the planned service. Moving everything too early can spread activity and creates unnecessary work if only certain areas need access.

Why am I seeing small roaches during the day?

Daytime activity can happen when hiding areas are crowded or disturbed. It is worth reporting, especially when young roaches are also present.

Will cleaning alone get rid of roaches?

Cleaning removes food and improves treatment, but established indoor roaches can remain in cracks, appliances, and wall voids. Sanitation and targeted control usually need to work together.

Tell us whether the roaches are large, small, or both.

Include where you see them, what time they appear, and anything you have already sprayed or baited.
