SPIDER CONTROL IN LAND O’ LAKES AND PASCO COUNTY

Webs Keep Returning Around the Garage, Lanai, or Doorways?

Spiders stay where food keeps showing up. The useful plan looks at the web and the insects gathering around it.

Call About the Spiders

One spider in a quiet corner is not always a pest-control emergency.

Many spiders are accidental visitors or outdoor hunters that help reduce insects. The concern changes when webs cover entries, egg sacs appear, spiders keep returning inside living areas, or someone in the home has a medical reason to avoid bites.

Garage lights, porch lights, lake and pond edges, landscaping, stored boxes, and screened enclosures attract the small flying and crawling insects spiders eat. Removing the web may improve the doorway for a day, but the spider has a reason for choosing that spot.

Identification from a blurry photo is unreliable. If the spider can be photographed safely, include the web style, size, markings, and the room or outdoor area. Do not handle it to get a closer picture.

CHECK THE SETTING

Where the web sits can explain why it returns

Garage door tracks and stored boxes

Dusty corners, cardboard, and insects entering under the door create easy hiding and feeding areas. Look for gaps and old webs behind storage.

Lanai screens, lights, and eaves

Moths, mosquitoes, midges, and other flying insects gather around light and water. A torn screen or door gap keeps the buffet open.

Indoor sightings away from windows

Repeated spiders in bedrooms, closets, or bathrooms may be following insects through wall gaps or plumbing areas. Note whether the same room is involved.

WEB REMOVAL PLUS THE FOOD SOURCE

Spider control is more useful when it includes the insects they are eating.

Accessible webs and egg sacs can be removed, likely harborage checked, and treatment focused around cracks, corners, eaves, doorways, and other appropriate areas. Broad indoor spraying is not automatically the answer.

Exterior lighting, screen repair, door seals, landscape contact, and insect activity around water can make a noticeable difference. A bulb or fixture change may reduce the number of insects gathering beside an entry.

If a medically significant spider is suspected, avoid handling it and keep children and pets away from the area. Capture a clear photo only if it can be done without getting close.

Simple information that helps with spider calls

The web and location often tell more than a description of “brown spider.”

Photograph the web as well as the spider

A round web, messy corner web, funnel, or no web at all can help narrow down the type and where it is living.

Notice the nearby insects

Look around lights, screens, drains, plants, and door gaps. If tiny insects are everywhere, spider activity may continue until that food source changes.

Do not reach into boxes or dark corners

Use gloves when moving stored items and keep hands where you can see them. There is no benefit to forcing a spider out for a photograph.

Spider questions from garages and lanais

A calmer look at recurring webs, identification, and the insects feeding them.

Why do spider webs come back overnight?

The location offers food, shelter, or both. Removing the web without reducing insects or closing the nearby gap leaves another spider a good place to build.

Are all brown spiders dangerous?

No. Color alone is not enough to identify a spider. Avoid handling it and use a clear photo of the spider, web, and location for a better starting point.

Can porch lights attract spiders?

The light attracts flying insects, and spiders follow the food. Changing the fixture location or bulb and cleaning webs can reduce activity near doors.

Should I spray a spider directly?

If it can be left alone safely, a photo and inspection of the area may be more useful. Do not climb or reach into unsafe spaces to treat one spider.

Why are spiders common around the lanai?

Screens, lights, plants, moisture, and insects around pools or ponds create good feeding areas. Door gaps and torn screens can move the problem inside the enclosure.

Do spiders mean the house is dirty?

No. They need prey and shelter, not a dirty house. Clean, well-kept homes can still have insects gathering around lights, water, screens, and small gaps.

Send a photo of the spider, web, and location.
